Symposium Mobile Learning in Context
CELSTEC, Open University of the Netherlands
Master of Learning Sciences
September 11, 2009

Mobile Learning is often cited and described as holding the potential to dramatically change the future of education and training in all areas of life (Horizon Reports 2004-2009). Already in the last ten years mobile devices have had a big impact on the way we communicate and behave in different contexts from school, higher education, home, and leisure. Innovation and research in mobile learning today is still strongly driven by new technologies and in most cases a posteriori structured along instructional designs. In many cases of technological innovation also the early adopters see the potential for learning and adopt it. On the other hand there is little research on what are the key qualities and characteristicas of mobile and contextualised learning. The symposium highlights several important aspects around mobile learning from personalisation, contextualisation, accessability, informal learning, and nomadic learning support. The goal is to drive the exchange of researchers and practitioners towards a new vision for technology enhanced education with contextualized mobile learning.
