Funding opportunities

Procedures for requesting financial support from NeLLL for promoting, stimulating and supporting LLL-research

Background

The Netherlands Laboratory for Lifelong Learning (NELLL) is an interfaculty and interdisciplinary research institute where the Open Universiteit can bundle its expertise on research about lifelong learning (LLL). In this way, the OU can achieve both focus and mass with respect to LLL research.
Beyond this, NeLLL has the goal to promote, stimulate and support LLL research at the OU. To this end, NeLLL can make use of the following instruments:

  • matching funds for research projects that are partially financed externally (both via a funding organisation as well as in the form of contract research)
  • premiums for the acquisition of fully financed externally funded research projects
  • financing of AAA-proposals that have been de-prioritised by recognised funding organisations
  • financial support of visiting professors, short-term visitors and colloquium speakers
  • offering courses and training for PhD-candidates and other researchers involved in LLL research that falls within the NeLLL research programme
  • provision of incentives for high-quality research performance.

To this end, NeLLL has developed procedures and application forms for organisational units and individuals within these units for applying for support so as to make the procedure as easy and transparent as possible.

Procedure for financial support for LLL research projects

  • An organisational unit petitions NeLLL to register a research project within one of the NeLLL research programme lines, along with a request for (co-)financing and/or other facilities. To this end the petitioner uses the Form for submitting research projects to NeLLL;
  • The NeLLL Management Team evaluates the application with respect to full or partial honouring of the request. Conditions for a positive decision are, in any event, that the:
    a) research proposal fits into one of the NeLLL research programme lines;
    b) NeLLL Management Team is in agreement with the additional funding that is being requested;
    c) requested additional funding is available.
  • The NeLLL Scientific Director makes a final decision, based upon the advice of the NeLLL Management Team, as to the request and communicates this to the respective person or organisational unit.

Procedure for financial support for visiting professorships, short-term visitors and colloquium speakers

  • A scientist from a sister (foreign) university shows an interest to come to the OUNL as a guest and/or an organisational unit within the OUNL invites the scientist to be a guest;
  • The scientist and organisational unit are coupled with the organisational unit functioning as home base;
  • The organisational unit concerned requests co-financing and/or other facilities from NeLLL. o this end the petitioner uses the form for submitting requests to NeLLL with respect to visiting professorships, colloquium speakers or short-term visitors;
  • The NeLLL Management Team evaluates the application with respect to full or partial honouring of the request. Conditions for a positive decision are, in any event, that the:
    a) visiting professor, short-term visitor or colloquium speaker would enrich the research activities within the NeLLL research programme;
    b) director of the NeLLL research programme line concerned agrees with the substance of the proposed contribution;
    c) requested additional funding is available.
  • The NeLLL Scientific Director makes a final decision, based upon the advice of the NeLLL Management Team, as to the request and communicates this to the respective person or organisational unit.
