ICO Toogdag

Toogdag Schedule

2011 - 2010 - 2009 - 2008 - 2007

Introduction

The toogdag (research meeting) is an initiative of ICO and is organized in co-operation with the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (NWO/PROO) and the Dutch Educational Research Association (VOR). This event is meant for PhD students, postdocs, and staff members of ICO. During the Toogdag, second and third-year PhD students give a presentation on their thesis project. Senior ICO members who are engaged in the same, or a related field of expertise will perform as discussant. This interaction with senior experts makes the toogdag an interesting meeting with lively discussions that often provide PhD students with fruitful ideas and new inspiration for their research.

Who is to present?

ICO PhD students are formally required to give a presentation on the Toogdag during the second and third year of their appointment. This requirement is taken somewhat liberally, however. Supervisors may for instance request that their PhD student presents at the Toogdag at an earlier or later stage.

What to present?

The 2nd year students are given the choice to present their thesis project in a Round Table Presentation, or as a Poster presentation. The 3rd year students present their project in a Paper Presentation. Presentations are grouped into sessions by ICO theme as much as posible and there will be ample opportunity for discussion. It is these discussions that make the Toogdag an interesting and informative happening for the presenters as well as their audience.

When and where to present?

The toogdag is an bi-annual event that takes place during the first Thursday and Friday of November. The exact date will be announced in April/May of that year. The intention is to organize the Toogdag at a different location each year, thereby visiting the cities in which the ICO universities reside.

How to prepare?

To prepare for the paper presentation, PhD students write a paper about their research. During their presentation, they highlight the main points of this paper in a 20-minute talk. The presentation and discussion are in English. This implies that the slides and the talk are prepared in English. If a session is attended by an all-Dutch audience, the presenter may choose to deliver his/her talk in Dutch.

The paper (and the presentation) addresses one or more central aspects of the research project. Which aspects are fit for inclusion depends on the content and nature of the research. Examples include an elaborated theoretical framework that operationalizes the projects central research questions, the experimental set-up and results of a first empirical study, the design of a learning environment, teacher training, assessment instrument, and so on.

Invitations to give a presentation at the Toogdag are sent out each year before July, so PhD students can already incorporate that date in their schedules. PhD students can basically start preparing their paper (APA style; 20 pages; maximum 6000 words, including references and abstract) or poster/round table presentation the moment they have received an invitation. In September, PhD students will be informed who will be their discussants and when they have to send them their paper and abstract (max. 300 words). The presenters of a Poster of a Round Table-presentation are asked to send in a short abstract of their presentation (max. 300 words). As a rule of thumb, papers are due three to four weeks prior to the Toogdag, so the submission deadline is around the beginning of October.
