The CPP Sustainability is a practice-oriented program at an academic level. If you are looking for a mix between practice and theory and would like to put what you have learned into practice, this is the program for you.

Sustainability: the management challenge
Our world is changing and becoming more sustainable. Think of the Paris Climate Convention or the decision to end the use of gas in the Netherlands. In this transition to a more sustainable society and a circular economy new business models emerge, as these issues affect the very nature of organizations.
How do you translate these challenges into a practical business and management approach? How can leaders, managers and employees gain insight into external developments? And what does this transition mean for their organization in concrete terms?
Sustainability: the management approach
The task managers are faced with is how to create long-term value for your organization for all stakeholders.
How can organizations, leaders and professionals respond to this development towards sustainability? What changes are necessary for organizations in order to stay truly sustainable? What does the pursuit of sustainability mean for the accountability information to stakeholders?
Sustainability: a core competence
Now that knowledge about sustainability is becoming essential for organizations, it is necessary to acquire and further develop this sustainability competence in-house. Being too dependent on external institutes or consultants is a real risk for long-term value creation. Naturally, also professionals and consultants who are (or aspire to be) working in the field of sustainability should acquire and further develop this knowledge and competence.
Dr. Cosmina Voinea, Assistant Professor Sustainable Management, under whose stimulating leadership the track was developed: ‘Sustainability requires firms to change their routines and involve themselves in new ways of doing business. We teach managers and entrepreneurs to leverage sustainability within their organizations and, as such, gain competitive advantage and market leadership.’
Sustainability: the training and courses
The Certified Professional Program Sustainability’s focus is:
- How to improve your business model and turn sustainability into opportunities. How does the circular economy contribute to your business proposition?
- How to design, structure, manage and justify a sustainability strategy and closed loop supply chains.
- How to design, implement and manage the supply chain in one by one circular  economy.
- How to think, analyze and act from a sustainability impact and how to measure it.
- How to measure the social impact of your company. How to build, execute and justify your communication strategy to all stakeholders.
- How to redesign business process and change management.
The courses have been developed under the supervision of, dr. Cosmina Voinea, with the contribution of prof. dr. Karen Maas, prof. dr. Ir. Harold Krikke, dr. Cosmina Voinea, ir. Dieudonnee Cobben, dr. Judith Floor, en dr. Ansje Lohr.
All are researchers at the Open University.

The training focuses on strengthening the sustainability of organizations. The framework of the courses is formed by sustainability as a management approach and management challenge. The program supports professionals and organizations in understanding how working sustainably is shaped in a changing world. The CPP Sustainability consists of the following 5 modules:
Module 1:
External pressure increases the need for your organization, that wants to survive, to operate sustainably. Successful implementation of a sustainable strategy and socially responsible action requires that your business strategy is aligned with external and internal policy requirements. It is also important that implementation of this strategy in the organization is feasible.
In our approach, the development of a sustainable strategy is not an isolated matter. For example, cooperation is required with numerous stakeholders. This necessity for organizations to cooperate is a result of the increased complexity of both the technology and the needs of the customer.
Module 2:
To achieve sustainable development, solving and preventing environmental problems, such as climate change, marine litter pollution, air pollution or loss of biodiversity is key. Environmental problems are not individual but societal issues, and involve discussions about the causes and possible suitable solutions. Within this context, environmental principles will enable you to diagnose and analyze environmental problems and find appropriate solutions. Scientific knowledge on the state of, and impact on, the environment as well as societal drivers and responses are essential to understand the complexity of environmental issues. After following this course you will have insight in the different aspects of environmental problems. This will help you find sustainable solutions and will give you insight in how to deal with uncertainties and risks. You will be able to apply your insights to the sustainable development contribution of your own organization.
Module 3:
Slowly but surely, sustainability is becoming a business proposition. As part of this, organizations increasingly see value in the Circular Economy. However, many companies and governments still struggle with the so-called intention-action gap: how will the circular economy really create value?
Closed loop supply chains are for organizations a link between strategic intent and operational action. This model introduces you to state-of-the-art concepts and applications, best practices in return management, strategy (re)formulation, redesign of business processes and change management.
Module 4:
What do you really want to achieve?
Why and how do you think your activities lead to the assumed impact? What is your key assumption? And what other factors may affect your results? You will learn about a 'Theory of Change (ToC)' and how this theory can help your organization to get a clearer picture of input, activities, output and impact.
What information will you use to communicate with stakeholders? And what kind of information is needed to inform them? You will get an overview of the different approaches (report, website, social media) and gain insight into the pros and cons. You will also get insight into the most important dilemmas that an organization faces when introducing impact thinking, measuring and managing. Finally, you will learn about the possible learning effects of impact thinking. How can you use the results to learn and further improve your organization?
Module 5:
We are on the eve of a new industrial revolution. Not only digitization plays an important role, but there is also a need to produce and consume in a sustainable way. We realize more often that innovative technologies can speed up the transition to a more sustainable economy. This course is about sustainable economy and the positive and negative influences that smart technologies can have. A game is part of this course. In the serious game Conquest for Paradise you experience for yourself what impact different sectors have in the current economic situation, but also what it takes to bring the world back into balance. The game represents the complexity of the sustainability transition. This game is played during a one-day meeting at location Brightlands Smart Services Campus (5de etage), Smedestraat 2, 6411 CR Heerlen. This game is offered at least twice a year. After finishing the game you make a reflection mission inside the yOUlearn learning environment of the OU.
