The EU Heating and Cooling Strategy aims to reduce the thermal energy demand as well as increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix. However, the process of replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources in the heating and cooling sector has been slower than in electricity generation, as renewables currently provide only 23% of that consumption (Eurostat 2020). In that regard, 5th generation of district heating and cooling (5GDHC) comes forward as a promising solution. Low-temperature, and demand-driven, these networks fit very well with energy efficient homes and reduce overall energy consumption by capitalizing on energy exchange between prosumers.
Are you interested to learn more about 5th generation district heating and cooling (5GDHC)? The D2Grids project is providing such opportunity. Open Universiteit, together with other D2Grids partners (BRGM, VITO, Greenflex, Mijnwater, ASPER), has developed a course on 5GDHC.
