Trustworthy AI Lab

Artificial Intelligence poses opportunities and challenges for society. The mission of the Trustworthy AI Lab at the Open Universiteit is to bring together a community of experts to advance AI research, education, and policy making. We want to support society by establishing and sharing best practices in the design, implementation, and oversight of ethical, responsible, mindful, sustainable, and trustworthy AI applications.

The laboratory has its home at the Faculty of Science, but it has an interdisciplinary focus, involving multiple international researchers from various disciplines (computer- and information science, law, human sciences, management sciences, psychology). It provides a peer forum for academic and industrial research and applications. We collaborate closely with national and international networks, such as the Brightlands AI Hub and the Z-Inspection® Initiative.

The Brightlands AI Hub is the Limburg regional alliance of companies, knowledge institutions, governments and civil society organizations that uses Artificial Intelligence to tackle social and business challenges. It is a member of the Dutch AI Coalition.

Z-Inspection® is a holistic process used to evaluate the trustworthyness of AI-based technologies at different stages of the AI lifecycle. It focuses, in particular, on the identification and discussion of ethical issues and tensions through the elaboration of socio-technical scenarios. It uses the general European Union’s High-Level Expert Group’s (EU HLEG) guidelines for trustworthy AI. Z-Inspection® is distributed under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike CC BY-NC-SA) license.

We are developing workshops and continuous learning possibilities for citizens, local and regional private entities, healthcare professionals, engineers and developers, students who want to learn more concerning the ethical and trustworthy use of AI. The Lab intends to encourage debate and reflection on the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence, acting as a meeting place for the international community, such as the Z-Inspection® assessment method for Trustworthy AI and its affiliated labs.
