RAGE's contribution to learning games rewarded with a Computable nomination
The renowned Dutch journal Computable has nominated the RAGE project for the 2020 Computable award on Digital Transformations. RAGE is a European project led by the Open University, that has developed reusable software components for learning games (serious games). Over 50 components are available for game developers and game studios who are free to integrate these advanced technologies in their games. In this way they can make better games, in less time and more cost-effectively.

Better, faster and more effectively

Eric Kluijfhout, one of the members of the project team, is happy about this acknowledgement of the value of the project. What is innovative about RAGE? 'Developers of serious games all use different development tools , different programming languages, different delivery platforms. And they all start from scratch. RAGE developed a range of reusable and interoperable components that all developer can 'plug in' into their game. For example 'role-playing' or 'emotion detectoin'. RAGE developed these components – over 50 of them. Developers of games can download them for free and integrate them in their game. In this way they can make better games in less time and more cost-effectively'.

Inspired by our own experience

The Open University of the Netherlands has 35 years of experience in distance education. Early in the nineties the institution developed their own learning games: ‘interactive confrontation with the profession’. Internet was in its infancy, so the games were delivered by laser discs and cd-rom. Developing Interactive learning games to acquire and practice professional competences has been an important activity ever since. The international RAGE project was inspired by these activities and experience. The output of this project is available for all research institutions and gaming studios in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe.

The winner of the Computable award is decided by a jury and by a public vote. Voting is possible until 1 November 2020 at the Computable website. You have to make an account and then you will receive a voting link. RAGE is one of 10 nominees in the category Digitale transformaties.

By the way: two other OU-projects have been nominated for a Computable award. DDGuide is nominated as Best educational project. This platform about online teaching was opened in March, when Dutch schools had to close down because of COVID-19. On this platform the OU shared its experience in online teaching to support all those teachers who suddenly had to give online classes. The third nominee is Testomat, the team that develops a model for software developers fot test automatization. Testomat is nominated as Best partnerproject.
