Finding approaches to school development based on science
School developments are often not effective. Many innovations and developments like a new way of teaching a specific subject are initiated in schools, but they often lack scientific information or research evidence for a deeper analysis of the questions behind the problem or solutions. In other words schools develop policy or innovations without knowledge utilisation from science or research.  A Dutch partnership of primary schools and researchers including Prof. Marjan Vermeulen researchers in the Welten Institute of the Open University of the Netherlands have been examining this challenge and  set themselves the task of developing a sustainable and evidence-informed framework to support school development.

The result of their work is a set of project materials (the self-assessment instrument, intervention cards and good practices) which have been published on the website of the Dutch National Support Centre for Teacher Education and Professionalization. A webtool based on this work will be hosted at the website of the Netherlands Initiative for Education Research (NRO), to ensure that the results of this initiative remain accessible for all schools in the Netherlands.
This initiative is one of just two finalists in the prestigious EAPRIL Best Research and Practice Project (BR&PP) award* which will be announced  at the EAPRIL conference on 12-14 November in Portorož Slovenia.
