Modern society faces many challenges: disruptive technological developments, the future of work (employability), cybercrime and climate change (sustainability) to name a few. Companies are confronted with the consequences these challenges entail. Resilience and the capacity for continuous and effective change (to keep up with the increasingly rapidly changing environment) is one of the critical success factors for organizations. The ability to develop new technological solutions and business processes is inextricably linked to resilience.
Smart Industry / Smart Services
Related to the digitization trend, the term smart industry refers to a future in which all systems and partners in a production process or network are connected via (digital) platforms. This way of working will generate large amounts of data and thus enables an exponential growth of new applications and the utilization of new possibilities. The term smart services refers to exploiting the potential of these large amounts of available data for delivering faster and more efficient services. The future the term smart industry refers to starts today. In this specialization we will discuss the possibilities that a number of (new) techniques will create for your organization. You learn to recognize and exploit the possibilities of technology and data and the new opportunities they open up. A critical look at the threats (cyber security) and privacy considerations with regard to data and technology is also part of the program.


The Certified Professional Program Smart Services consists of 6 modules of which you have to choose 4. These six modules are all aimed at providing insight into the possibilities, limitations and challenges around various technological developments and data.
Analytics is the newest challenge for organizations that want to take a lead on their competitors. Although success stories are widely advertised in industry publications, many organizations are struggling to derive meaningful insights from their big data. In addition, organizations that want to develop a data-driven organizational culture need to figure out how to design a governance structure that meets the emerging ethical and legal frameworks.
In the Business Analytics course, students are made familiar with the emerging field of business analytics. To this end, students learn about the three common types of business analytics and their practical application. Furthermore, students will gain a better understanding of the organizational processes and structures that are needed to develop and nurture the analysis skills of an organization and a data-driven organizational culture. The ultimate goal is to gain strategic advantage for the organization.
Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most important trends in digitization. This creates a global ecosystem of sensors and digital connections. IoT will have a huge impact on the policies and business models of companies in particular. At the same time it offers unprecedented opportunities for new products and services. In this module we focus on the business administration and management aspects of IoT
The course offers great clarity and insight into the powerful mix of economic, social, technical and legal components that ensure confidence in the underlying blockchain. We discuss blockchain foundations, possibilities, challenges and technical and social problems. Students learn different innovation strategies and analyze business cases (best & worst). This course teaches you the fundamentals of Blockchain technology and the meaning of decentralized, encrypted data storage for companies and institutions. The course offers an overview of the blockchain: the advantages over previous technology, how transactions are stored on the blockchain, how blockchain mining works through consensus, private versus public blockchains, concepts of cryptography and smart contracts. Je leert over de kansen die blockchain biedt op het gebied van slimme contracten, proof of ownership, payment rails, immutable ledger, geldtransacties en micro-transacties.The course will demonstrate the application of blockchain technology in various areas including identity management, supply chain, real estate use and FinTec. In addition, the course covers technology platforms from blockchain, such as Hyperledger (IBM) and Interledger (Ripple). We delve further into the technology, the difference in blockchains, the questions that need to be asked before a process is started and what the process of developing a block chain application looks like.
With the rise of digital network technology, our society is changing radically. Information is available immediately, twenty-four hours a day, at a minimum cost and anywhere in the world. Although the internet and digital platforms bring enormous benefits and opportunities, there are also risks associated with these new technologies. In recent years there has been a strong increase in cybercrime, many organizations have become victims of cybercrime in some form. This module focuses on recognizing threats and preventing cybercrime.
The development of disruptive technology has many faces. This module focuses on the many themes that are closely related to new technologies: ethics, privacy and their impact on modern society and democracy. How do we deal with transparency, responsibility and justice when developing big data and AI tools? How can innovators ensure disruptive products and services do not violate ethical norms and values? How do regulations, such as the GDPR, aid in protecting these norms and what are the implications thereof for privacy protection within your organization?
We are on the eve of a new industrial revolution. Not only digitization plays an important role, but there is also a need to produce and consume in a sustainable way. We realize more often that innovative technologies can speed up the transition to a more sustainable economy. This course is about sustainable economy and the positive and negative influences that smart technologies can have. A game is part of this course. In the serious game Conquest for Paradise you experience for yourself what impact different sectors have in the current economic situation, but also what it takes to bring the world back into balance. The game represents the complexity of the sustainability transition. This game is played during a one-day meeting at location Brightlands Smart Services Campus (5de etage), Smedestraat 2, 6411 CR Heerlen. This game is offered at least twice a year. After finishing the game you make a reflection mission inside the yOUlearn learning environment of the OU.


(Study duration)
The study load of the CPP Smart Services is approximately 560 hours. Successful completion leads to 20 ec. You have 14 months of registration rights and can decide for yourself where, when and at what pace you study. We advise you to invest at least 12 hours a week for your studies.
It is also possible to register for a single module instead of the whole CPP. A single module has a size of 5 ec and a study load of approximately 140 hours. You will receive 6 months registration rights for a single module. You can determine for yourself where, when and at what pace you study.


You can study the program independently at your own pace in the online learning environment of the Open University. You will receive personal support from a content specialist university teacher.
Main language of this professional program is English excluding Internet of Things this course is in Dutch.

  • HBO (higher professional education) working or thinking level.
  • Some years of relevant work experience.

The registration fee for the CPP Smartservices is € 6.495. It is also possible to pay in 10 monthly instalments of € 670.
The fee for a separate module is € 1,750 or 5 monthly instalments of € 370.
These amounts are all-in: there are no additional costs and the course is exempt from VAT.
Do you pay the fees yourself? Then the costs may be deductible from your income tax.
In the Netherlands for private individuals a maximum deduction of € 15,000 is possible, with a threshold of € 250.-. For more information please access the website of the tax authorities and look for: study costs.
Please note: The Open University Course Fee Discount Scheme (KCOU) and the Lifelong Learning Credit (LLLK) discount scheme do not apply to Certified Professional Programs.


After successful completion of the four individual modules you will receive a diploma Certified Professional Program Smart Services. In addition to the CPP diploma, you will receive partial certificates for each of the modules. The diploma can be introduced as a full specialization in yOUrMBA.
