Calligraphy tutor shortlisted for International Students Design Contest
PhD candidate Bibeg Limbu from the TeLI group within the Welten Institute was delighted to find out this week that the application 'Calligraphy Tutor' that he has been working on was selected as one of the top three finalists in the 2018 International Student Design Contest organised by ASLRED. The winner will be announced during the 3rd International Conference on Smart Learning Ecosystems and Regional Development which will be held on May 23-25 in Aalborg, Denmark when Bibeg will give a presentation and demonstration of his work.

Design

The Calligraphy Tutor application is designed to record the fine motor movements of calligraphy experts through a range of sensors including a Hololens and a MYO armband which tracks gestures and EMG data from arm muscles. This data is then used to provide calligraphy newcomers with the feedback and guidance they need when setting out to learn calligraphy for the first time.

Bibeg

Bibeg is half way through his PhD and his work contributes to the research being carried out by the Welten team led by Roland Klemke in WEKIT, a large European project exploring the role of wearable technologies in learning. According to Bibeg, this tool can play an important role in helping young children learn cursive writing and he plans to test the software with such pupils later this year. Many people question the role and value of cursive writing in our increasingly digitalised world. But according to Bibeg, if people learn to write better in the first place, such a skill is one that we simply cannot ignore in the future.
