Inaugural lecture and symposium: Open education as Knowledge infrastructure for the 21st century – Exploring the middle space

On 17 November 2017, Prof. Dr. Marco Kalz will deliver his inaugural lecture at the Open University of the Netherlands preceded by a scientific symposium that will highlight the latest research on open education. The title of the symposium is: Open education as Knowledge infrastructure for the 21st century – Exploring the middle space.

OER and MOOCs

In recent years, higher education institutions worldwide have opened up part of their educational offer to the general public. Open educational resources (OER) and (Massive) Open Online Courses are attracting millions of users who use this opportunity for self-learning, professional development and study or career advancement. These activities are situated in a “middle-space” in which formal educational institutions are creating learning opportunities which are mostly used in a non-formal context by learners.

Open knowledge infrastructure

This middle-space creates a lot of confusion not only amongst the public, but also in the scientific community who are grappling with the role of open education in society and about the implications for higher education institutions. The inaugural lecture and the scientific symposium will highlight the latest research on open education. International keynote speakers and experts from OUNL will contribute to create a highly inspirational day during which you will not only hear about the latest developments in Open Education but will also be inspired by what many consider to be a drastic change in the way we can react to societal challenges of the 21st century.

Save the date

The conference and inaugural lecture take place on the 17th of November 2017 at the Open Universiteit in Heerlen. More information on speakers and programme will soon be made available on the conference site.
