Beyond experimentation: education that scales and matters

How can universities ensure that academic education remains agile, relevant and impactful in a rapidly changing technological and societal landscape? The ICAB Conference 2026 brings together educators, researchers and academic leaders from faculties of science to explore what comes beyond experimentation.
How do we design education that is future-ready? What does meaningful impact look like in academic education? How can we balance experimentation with quality, scalability and sustainable implementation? And how can education, research and engagement with society reinforce one another?
With more than 20 contributions from universities across the Netherlands, we have a rich and diverse program featuring innovative practices, experiences and perspectives. Rather than focusing solely on generative AI as the latest hype, the conference takes a broader look at how we can turn experimentation and innovation into education that scales, lasts and matters.

Rogier van de Wetering is Full Professor of Digital-Driven Transformation and Vice-Dean of Education at the Faculty of Sciences at the Open Universiteit, the Netherlands. He is also the Chair of the ICAB Conference 2026. In his role as Vice-Dean, he is closely involved in the development and innovation of academic education within the Faculty of Sciences.
Before joining academia, Rogier spent over a decade in Deloitte’s Strategy & Operations practice, where he led IT- and business transformations and advised more than 75 organizations across diverse sectors, including universities and academic medical centers.
His research focuses on digital-driven transformation, enterprise architecture, digital ecosystems, and technology-enabled innovation. His recent work particularly explores how emerging technologies such as generative AI can contribute to organizational transformation and innovation.
Rogier combines academic expertise with extensive practical experience and is an active researcher, keynote speaker, consultant, and educator.
Ellen Davids is a teacher and education coordinator at the Faculty of Sciences at the Open Universiteit, specifically within the Environmental Sciences. In her role as an education coordinator, she aids the dean, vice-dean, and other support staff with policy-making, administration, and quality assurance. As a teacher, she aims to improve the understanding of chemistry among environmental sciences bachelor students. She will also serve as the host of the ICAB Conference 2026.
