Training for astronauts using WEKIT prototype

The WEKIT project organised recently a trial on wearable technologies in the astronaut training programme. A task from this program was selected and adapted to see how suitable it was for training using the task-sensitive Augmented Reality approach being developed in the WEKIT project. The task chosen was a real procedure that astronauts have to perform, namely the installation of a Temporary Stowage Rack in the Automated Transfer Vehicle which performs supply missions to the International Space Station (ISS), transporting various payloads such as propellant, water, air, food, and scientific research equipment.

The trial took place at the ALTEC facilities in Turin, from 2 to 5 May, 2017. Almost 40 people took part in the trial which included trainers and ALTEC and TAS-I employees as well as students from Politecnico di Torino.

WEKIT is a an ambitious European research and innovation project supported under Horizon 2020 to develop and test within three years a novel way of industrial training enabled by smart Wearable Technology (WT). The Welten Institute is one of the partners.
