Faculty of Educational Sciences

The Faculty of Educational Sciences, formerly the Welten Institute, is the center for education and research in the field of learning, teaching and educational technology of the Open Universiteit. It focuses on enhancing the quality of education through professionalisation and excellent academic as well as practice oriented research.

Research in the field of educational sciences

The Faculty of Educational Sciences works on a comprehensive research programme in the field of educational technology, online learning and innovation through IT. The programme is called: Learning and teaching in technology enriched learning environments. The research followes two research lines.

The faculty research focuses on formulating theories and instruments in the field of educational sciences that also contributes to the expertise development in the field of educational innovation. This research line builds on the research of the former Welten Institute.

The second line is formed by multidisciplinary research with the faculties of the Open Universiteit and with other higher education partners into problems that are found in educational practice. The focus is on online learning, blended learning, on the use of media and on educational technology. Innovations are studied form a scientific and a design point of view. Partners participate in these projects in different ways: as researchers, as educational designers and/or as teachers.
