Developing a competence framework for biodiversity restoration

Biodiversity restoration is becoming increasingly important in European and Dutch policy and practice. However, restoring biodiversity is not only a matter of ecological knowledge or policy ambitions. It also requires professionals who are able to design, implement, monitor and evaluate restoration measures in real-world contexts.

As part of a broader PhD project on biodiversity restoration competencies in Dutch vocational education, we are looking for a master’s student who would like to contribute to the development of a Biodiversity Restoration Competence Framework. This framework aims to identify which competencies professionals need to contribute to biodiversity restoration, and how these competencies may differ between professional roles and educational levels.
The thesis project can be adapted to the background and interests of the student, but could include the following activities:

  • Reviewing scientific literature on sustainability competencies, ecological restoration, nature-based solutions and conservation capacity development;
  • Analysing relevant European and Dutch policy documents, legislation and professional frameworks related to biodiversity restoration;
  • Identifying and comparing competence requirements from literature, policy and professional practice;
  • Developing a thematic matrix or draft framework of competencies for biodiversity restoration;
  • Optionally: consulting a small group of experts to reflect on or validate the draft framework.

This thesis is especially suitable for students with an interest in biodiversity restoration, sustainability transitions, environmental governance, education for sustainable development, competence development, or vocational and higher education.
